The area around Calis Beach, Fethiye, Turkey

The 'Turquoise Coast' as this part of South West Turkey is known, is noted for its fine beaches and beautiful scenery. Fethiye, the regional capital is "advantageously situated for visits to some of the Turquoise Coast's more fascinating sites" (Rough Guide), and occupies the site of the ancient Lycian city of Telmessos. You can still see the impressive rock tombs just above the town, which with its bustling harbour, and lively Turkish shops and restaurants is well worth several visits.

Fethiye, linked to Calis, by water taxi and a very good and cheap bus service is one vantage point for trips to the famous lagoon of Olu Deniz, the "ghost town" of Kaya Kayu and the popular resort of Hisaronu with its many fine restaurants of every variety, and souvenir shops.

Fethiye and Calis Beach are much less overrun in the height of the season than Icmeler / Marmaris etc. A cooling breeze keep temperatures pleasant even in the height of the summer..
